Sinai Wellbeing and Arts Retreat: 9th – 16th November 2023

Join professional artist, Rosalind Wyatt on Sinai Wellbeing and Arts Retreat for an unforgettable week in a remarkable place.

During this Wellbeing and Arts Retreat, in St Catherine’s Monastery, we will be accompanied by British artist and storyteller, Rosalind Wyatt – whose interest and expertise in calligraphy and textiles as a present witness to the creative process of Beauty.  She longs to see the manuscripts and icons and connect with the spiritual significance, and she plans to take this inspiration forward into creative expression through writing, stitch, colour and form.  Rosalind will be running practical workshops at the monastery, introducing and guiding those who’d like to learn and discover more about these artforms.

Whatever your creative practice and profession, this is an opportunity to reflect,  absorb and create.

  • Simple approach to embroidery, stitch, tapestry and weave
  • How to form letters in stitch – design and stitch your own (tapestry letter / icon / quilt piece / ribbon ) inspired by the vestments and embroidery, here at the monastery

Angie White, our Wind, Sand and Stars Leader will encourage and accompany those of us who would like to climb Mt Sinai, on foot or by camel.  Experienced in exploration and leading walking and climbing tours around the world, Angie is excited to be returning to St Catherine’s  this year.

Liz Edmunds has visited St Catherine’s Monastery many times and taken groups with different leaders who can open up through their own study and experience the different treasures to be found there.  Her own love of the Monastery springs from a sense of its spiritual drawing power and it is this love which takes her back again and again.  Anyone who wishes to dedicate some time to contemplation and quiet time will be welcome to join her.

The Monastery Library and Museum as well as the Church itself are full of treasures with profound significance.  It has been our great good fortune to be allowed time with Father Justin, the librarian who has overseen the renovation and restoration of manuscripts and of the library itself.  He is currently overseeing the Palimpsest project to uncover and digitalise manuscripts which have been used more than once and can now be discerned and read and photographed with digital technology.

Wind, Sand and Stars takes groups of people to Sinai and the unique Monastery of St Catherine which lies at the foot of Mount Sinai, where Old and New Testament meet.  Guaranteed over the centuries since it was built by Mohammed, by Emperor Justinian, and Napoleon, there has been a continuous Monastic Community there since the 4th Century.  Home to an unrivalled collection of Manuscripts, hundreds of icons dating from early Christianity, treasures from royal houses and religious communities from all over Christendom, it remains a centre for pilgrims and seekers of a living Truth.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival

Your guide will meet you at Sharm el Sheik Airport at 5pm, local time, before heading to a 4* hotel in Sharm for a well-earned rest after a day of travelling.

Day 2: Journey to St Catherine’s Monastery

We road trip through the desert towards St Catherine’s Monastery. Stopping along the way, we will view rock inscriptions carved by early pilgrims as they journeyed from Jerusalem to St Catherine. We can take in the stunning view of the nearby oasis of Ayun Khudra as we enjoy Bedouin tea, before we continue into the mountainous interior where this Greek Orthadox Monastery lies at the foot of Mount Sinai – the very place where God appeared to Moses in the Burning Bush.

Built in the 6th century by the Byzantine Emperor Justinian, its original towering outer walls, built to protect the monks from marauding tribes, still stand. During the day we will have time for introductions with Rosalind and the team, and orientation before our dinner together in the monastery.

Day 3 and 5: Stitching and making at St Catherine’s Monastery

We will spend the next few days based at the Monastery.

This flexible daily programme will begin with a morning meditation together, or time alone for retreat and reflection or study.

Every day consists of half a day doing structured creative activities and learning from Rosalind in the workshops, and in the other half of the day, there is the option of either continuing your artwork, quiet personal time, or going on optional daily excursions offsite.  These include visiting the local village of St Catherine, and walks to some nearby hermitages and viewpoints.

We may be invited to attend afternoon Vespers. The trip allows for plenty of time and space for reflection, contemplation, self-discovery, rest, and dialogue throughout.

Day 6 and 7: Finishing and sharing workshop at St Catherine’s

In the mornings we can visit the magnificent Basilica, with its 6th century mosaic in the apse, and spend time taking inspiration from the rare collections of icons and manuscripts in the museum.

There will also be time dedicated to workshops.

There will be an optional ascent of Mount Sinai one day, a steady uphill walk for 2-3 hours along the traditional camel path (with camels available for hire for the ascent), then up steep Byzantine steps carved into the rocks to the summit.  (The camels cannot continue on this final section).

Day 8: Return home

Today we depart St Catherine’s, say our farewells and fly home. The optional extension to Cairo commences.

All activities are optional and the final daily programme will depend on the group’s individual interests, local conditions and to allow for Monastery opening times.

Overnight at St Catherine’s Monastery Guesthouse. Please note accommodation is simple and rooms are shared, though a few single rooms may be possible depending on availability and we always try to secure them when requested. A single supplement is payable.

A unique experience and a privilege to share the Bedouin’s way of life, for a short time.

Enthralling and beyond my hopes, it was a deeply spiritual experience at many levels. I am still raving about it all to anyone who crosses my path!

“The whole trip was AMAZING – thank you so much.”

Francis Burkitt, St Catherine tailor made, August 2017

We got more out of our adventure than we had ever hoped for, thanks to a country of huge diversity and historical interest and to a very special guide.

Cunningham family, Jordan, April 2017

So many thoughts about our wonderful trip to St Catherine’s; the fantastic warmth of welcome from the Egyptians, Fathers Justin and Nilus, and the unique history which we felt privileged to be given access to. In my book, how could one not enjoy and be inspired!

Julia Palmer, St Catherine’s Retreat, February 2017

“Huge thanks to all at Wind, Sand & Stars for an amazing trip. John’s passion for Ethiopia fires his erudition and he gave us more insights into the country, past and present, than we could ever have gained from local guides.”
