Adventure into Silence

Sara Maitland's widely praised A Book of Silence was the inspiration for our first Adventure into Silence during September 2009. We are delighted to announce that Sara will return to Sinai once again to lead this non-denominational gentle adventure. Traditions of the East and West say that silence is found in its purest form in the desert and, set in the most beautiful sandstone area of the Sinai with our Bedouin hosts, the week will involve periods of silence, alone and as a group, interspersed with time for exploration. On the final day there is an optional visit to St Catharine's Monastery before an afternoon swim in the Red Sea where we stay the final night in a four-star hotel to help the transition from the desert lands and its people to the flight home.

Culture, nature and biblical association are all part of this wonderful journey across the Sinai. As well as being closely associated with the Old Testament, Sinai was an important centre for early Christianity. The journey encompasses historical sites including chalcolithic tombs, the Ancient Egyptian temple of Serabit el Khadem and of course St Catherine’s Monastery, one of the treasure houses of early Christian manuscripts and art. Our guest speakers will inspire and delight, sharing their insights and leading discussions as we travel through this land steeped in history. Following the traditional route of the Exodus we cross the peninsula through the Western mountain range and on to Mt Sinai, finishing in the Eastern sandstone desert. The itinerary will also include a two-day camel trek with the Bedouin.
